Communications (or the lack thereof …)

One of the most important aspects of being reasonably successful in the internet services / web design business is good communications between us and our clients.  There are a lot of folks who thinks themselves accomplished business types but who fail the most important thing: communications.  By that I don’t mean that they can’t talk or that they don’t know all the techno babble, acronyms, etc.  Good communications is not a one-way street – it means listening as well as talking.  It means keeping to language the client can understand.  It means explaining shortcomings as well as benefits of a certain approach.  It means being consistent and fair in your pricing and not charging clients for your learning time.  And for me at least good communications means that I call all my good clients from time to time just to see how things are going and to see if they’re happy with our products and services.

On the other hand, poor communications are like this:  not answering the phone when a certain client calls about a certain (bad news) issue.  Not calling when you say you would. Not following up on promises made.  Lying.  Over promising and under delivering.  Going over budget without discussing with the client first.  And many more …

At Strategic Online Marketing we make great efforts to be good at communications and that makes for happy business relationships.
